Emergency Vehicle: Proper Decontamination Procedures

Emergency vehicles are constantly been faced with incidences in which blood and body fluids are present. These can get into the vehicles and become a breeding place for pathogens. Emergency vehicles, including ambulances and police vans, are constantly used to transport injured accident victims, for instance, and so can easily become a perfect home for pathogens including viruses and bacteria. These pathogens pose great risks to the general health of the emergency service workers who usually use the vehicles and the patients that are carried in them. As a result of the fact that the emergency vehicles may be called up several times in a day, they can easily be contaminated by biohazards, thus, the need for an emergency vehicle decontamination service.

Though the EMT technicians usually do their best to ensure that the emergency vehicles are in good shape, it is however not enough because they are trained to save lives in times of emergency. This would therefore cause their attention to be on the patients and this diversion can cause harmful substances and materials to be left in the vehicle. An emergency vehicle decontamination service would thoroughly clean and carry out disinfection of the emergency vehicles, thus minimizing the risk of contamination.

Procedures for Emergency Vehicle Decontamination

An emergency vehicle decontamination service will help deep clean the emergency vehicle and return it to its safe state, thus reducing the risk of infection and contamination from biohazards. Emergency vehicle decontamination service is carried out on ambulances, vehicles that are found at the site of a violent crime or incident, police cars, and cars used to transport prisoners.

Here are some steps carried out during emergency vehicle decontamination

  • Clean the exterior:

The first step to cleaning the emergency vehicle is to clean the exterior. Cleaning the exterior of the vehicle should be done before the interior or any other part of the vehicle is cleaned. Proper washing of the entire body of the emergency vehicle and brushing of the tires should be done.

  • Clean the interior:

After cleaning the exterior of the emergency vehicle, you can now go on to clean the interior. When cleaning the interior of the vehicle, you have to make sure that the seats and the floor are properly and thoroughly cleaned. It is advisable that when carrying out this procedure, you wear a glove and other personal protective equipment. Be particular about the radio microphones and door handles. Also, ensure that the stretchers which are used to transport patients every day are thoroughly and properly cleaned and decontaminated.

  • Decontamination:

After cleaning, it is very necessary to decontaminate the emergency vehicle. When decontaminating the emergency vehicle, you should endeavor to use the appropriate disinfectant, wipes, and sprays. Extreme care should be taken when carrying out the decontamination. This is to ensure that every part of the emergency vehicle is decontaminated and ready to be used again without the fear of the spread of infection.

Highlighted above are the basic steps required for emergency vehicle decontamination. However, when facing a particular disease, it is recommended that further strict procedures are to be carried out during the process of decontamination.
